MCPS Schools on the Rise: A Story of Progress and Possibility
MCPS continues to demonstrate strong academic momentum, according to the 2024–2025 Maryland School Report Card released by the Maryland State Department of Education.
Across the county, schools are bringing the MCPS Strategic Plan to life, with a focus on ensuring all schools earn more than 4 stars by 2035. Among the success stories this year are Rosemont Elementary School, William H. Farquhar Middle School and Watkins Mill High School. Rosemont and Farquhar moved from three to four stars, while Watkins Mill moved from two to three stars.
Rosemont Elementary School
At Rosemont Elementary, intentional leadership and data-driven instruction has led to progress. The school has strengthened Tier 1 instruction and implemented targeted interventions that meet every student’s needs. By empowering teachers to use performance data to refine practice, Rosemont built a culture of shared accountability and high expectations. The result: an 8.9-point increase on the Maryland Report Card and a well-earned four-star rating, a testament to a community grounded in relationships, academic rigor and results.
William H. Farquhar Middle School
At William H. Farquhar Middle School, growth has been driven by a focus on language development, inclusion, and support for Emerging Multilingual Learners. Rigorous instruction in English classes contributed to strong English Language Arts Median growth percentile results. Academic progress was complemented by vibrant community engagement, with events like STEM Night and Hispanic Heritage Night drawing over 400 participants. Together, these efforts propelled Farquhar from three to four stars, reflecting the power of unity and purposeful connection.
Watkins Mill High School
At Watkins Mill High School, affectionately known as The Mill, students and staff have embraced a culture of “progress, not perfection.” Focused on strengthening grade-level instruction, improving attendance and supporting student success through data-informed collaboration, the school has seen measurable results: Graduation rates are up, chronic absenteeism is down and both staff and students are recognized for their commitment and growth. Rising from two to three stars is only the beginning; the school continues to build a culture where every student thrives and every voice matters.
The gains seen across MCPS this year tell a shared story: when schools focus on strong instruction, data-driven reflection and meaningful relationships, growth follows. From elementary through high school, educators and students are proving that excellence is achievable, and sustainable, when everyone works together toward a common goal.
