MCPS Summer Programs

Summer School 2025 focuses primarily on our high school students who need to earn credits towards graduation. Both In-person and Virtual High School Summer School Programs will be offered this year. Additional opportunities for non-credit courses may be available at local high schools. These programs all carry tuition costs for the summer. More information is available below.

Summer programming will also be available to K-12 students who receive special education services and have qualified for Extended School Year (ESY) services and students in Title I elementary and middle schools (through the ELO-Sail program).

In-Person High School
Summer School Program

  • In-person at Gaithersburg High School 
  • Students attend from 8:00AM - 12:30PM daily
  • Each .5 credit course lasts three weeks
  • Students may take one course per session (may take one additional course in the Central Program as well, but Central course time must be Late)

Who is eligible? Any MCPS high school student in need of replacing or taking original credit for graduation required courses. Students will register with their school counselors.

Virtual High School
Summer School Program

  • Virtual/Online Only
  • Blended learning opportunity with 10 hours of required synchronous instruction, and approximately 30-40 hours of asynchronous work per course
  • Each .5 credit course lasts three weeks
  • Students may take up to two virtual classes per session (or students taking a course in the Regional Program may only take one additional Central Program course)

Who is eligible? Any MCPS high school student in need of replacing or taking original credit for graduation required courses. Students will register with their school counselors.

Local Middle and High School Summer Programs

  • Some middle and high schools may be offering non-credit courses with tuition fees set by the program
  • Credit recovery options may be available at local programs at no cost to students.
  • Please reach out to your student’s high school to determine whether there are opportunities for either non-credit courses or credit recovery.

Who is eligible? This is dependent on the local school program


Extended School Year (ESY)

Extended School Year (ESY) services will be available at identified ESY sites/school locations:

  • ESY is free for all ESY eligible students
  • Eligibility is determined by the Individual Education Plan (IEP) team at an IEP meeting
  • Individualized services will be based on the student’s IEP and eligibility criteria
  • Discrete services in all areas of special education will be available
  • Related services will be available at every site (speech-language, OT/PT, etc.)
  • Transportation will be provided as appropriate
  • Meal services will be offered as appropriate and based on eligibility criteria
  • Special schools and centers will also offer ESY services
  • ESY services will also be offered at the Title I/Extended Learning Opportunity sites

ELO Sail

Extended Learning Opportunities Summer Adventures in Learning (ELO SAIL) is available to students who are future enrolled in selected Title I schools for the 2025-2026 school year. More information can be found here

Early Childhood Summer Program

MCPS will be offering an early childhood summer program at the Up County Early Childhood Center in the month of July for select students currently enrolled in Prekindergarten and Head Start by invitation only.  Eligible families will be contacted directly by the PreK/Head Start Unit in the month of March.
