Board of Education Update

At its February 19 Business Meeting, the Board of Education tentatively adopted the Fiscal Year 2027 Operating Budget, approved technical amendments to the 2025–2026 school calendar, and reviewed its positions on important 2026 education legislation. The Board also celebrated student leadership and achievement, highlighting the SMOB Nominating Convention, the opening of the Patricia B. O’Neill Student Art Gallery, and recognitions for Black History Month, National School Counselors Week, Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month, and Career and Technical Education Month, showcasing the creativity, dedication, and impact of students and community partners across Montgomery County.

En su reunión de trabajo del 19 de febrero, el Consejo de Educación adoptó de manera preliminar el Presupuesto Operativo para el Año Fiscal 2027, aprobó enmiendas técnicas al calendario del ciclo escolar 2025–2026 y revisó sus posturas sobre legislación educativa importante de 2026. Celebrate Black History Month

 

Celebrate Black History Month with four inspiring episodes from the Montgomery County Board of Education: Echoes of the Ancestors explores the legacy of Scotland A.M.E. Zion Church and the roots of Black education; The Making of a Legacy honors Carver High School and the students who navigated desegregation while carrying their community’s values forward; Leading for the Future features Monique Ashton reflecting on leadership and representation; and Reclaiming Home highlights the resilience of Black communities in Montgomery County, tracing how formerly enslaved families built strong neighborhoods after the Civil War and how their legacy endures today. Join us to celebrate history, honor achievements, and be inspired by the stories shaping our community’s past, present, and future.

 

 

Grace Rivera-Oven Elected President of Montgomery County Board of Education; Brenda Wolff Named Vice President

Grace Rivera-Oven was elected president of the Montgomery County Board of Education and Brenda Wolff was named vice president at the beginning of the board’s November 20 business meeting.

Rivera-Oven, who represents District 1 and was elected to the board in 2022, will begin her first term as president in December. 1. She previously served as chair of the Committee on Special Populations and is the founder and CEO of the Upcounty Hub, a Germantown-based nonprofit addressing food insecurity and providing social services to more than 1,400 families weekly. Rivera-Oven said her focus will remain on student well-being and equity.

Wolff, representing District 5, has served on the board since 2018 and previously held two terms as president and one term as vice president. She spent 27 years with the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights and has held leadership roles in several national education programs.

Board leaders serve one-year terms. The president chairs meetings, signs approved contracts and documents, represents the board in communications, and performs other duties as needed.

The Montgomery County Board of Education will hold its business meeting on Thursday, March 26 at 15 W Gude Drive, RockvillePlease note that the meeting will begin at 4:00 p.m. Details, including the meeting agenda, are available on our website.

The meeting will be cablecast live on Comcast Channel 34 (HD 1071), Verizon Channel 36, RCN Channel 89, and streamed on the MCPS website.
